What happened:

• Placed at opposite ends of a huge labyrinth, the clever clog Stephens raced to snatch the prize belt from the middle and get back out again while avoiding the minotaur (played by Craig Charles).

• Egghead Fry used his expansive knowledge of mythology (and his really long shoelaces) to trace his course through the maze.

• Hawking had a special “sat nav” installed in him specifically for the event but the batteries ran out leaving him stranded and lost in hedge.

Winner: Fry held the belt for another year, wearing it at celebrity events at every opportunity and smearing yet more intellectual egg all over Hawking’s face.
