Few things bring me greater pleasure than coming
back from the public library with an armful of Old
Norse. With the notable exception of coming back
from the dealers with an armful of new horse. It’s
under the weight of such spoils Bill Oddie can oft
be spied (by eagle-eyed fellow twitchers!) flapping
and puffin his way home to spread it all out on
his hand-made kitchen bird table, and immerse himself
in a world of words, birds and the absurd. For instance
did you know these vital lexical building blocks
come from Old Norse? EGG, GLOVE,
WING, SLEUTH,
GEAR, SCORE, ACHE
and WANT . |

A lot of the time I just
want to go to sleep.
